Chevrolet Cruze at Jon Hall Chevrolet Goes ‘Shields Up’ for Max Protection

Segment-exclusive underbody splash shields improve durability and fuel economy in the all-new 2012 Cruze available at Jon Hall Chevrolet located in Daytona Beach, Florida.

When it comes to making sure the Chevrolet Cruze is as durable as it can be, Dave Schoener and his teammates are all wet. As a General Motors splash test engineer, Schoener helped develop an innovative splash shield for the Chevrolet Cruze that protects the engine compartment from water and potentially harmful contaminants.

In addition, the splash shields, a segment exclusive in the Cruze, help prevent underbody corrosion by repelling water, dirt and mud. They also contribute to the Cruze’s fuel economy – an EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway for Cruze Eco – by reducing wind drag.

“With the Cruze, you have a very comprehensive splash protector on an entry sedan that you typically wouldn’t see except in high-end luxury vehicles,” said Schoener.

Schoener recommended adding underbody shields to the Cruze after observing repeated splash tests in GM’s new $1.4-million Flooded Road Lab at the company’s Milford, Mich. Proving Ground.
There, engineers drove the Cruze through a submerged roadway filled with two to 12 inches of standing water – at speeds ranging from five to 35 miles per hour – to ensure long-term quality and dependability. Schoener and his team used the lab learning to find solutions to keep water, grit, salt and other contaminants away from the Cruze’s engine and transmission.

Facilities such as the Flooded Road Lab demonstrate GM’s commitment to vehicle quality, where thousands of miles of simulated abuse provide opportunities to improve vehicles before they reach customers. Underbody splash shields are among many improvements added to GM’s vigorous long-term durability testing.

A long-distance runner, Schoener compares long-term durability testing to preparing for a marathon. “Just as I train to build endurance before each race, achieving long-term vehicle durability comes from putting the Cruze through its paces here at the Proving Ground,” he said. “We do intense durability testing to ensure our customers get top-quality vehicles they will enjoy for many years.”

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 convertible is a topless powerhouse.

When the Camaro ZL1 goes on sale in late 2012 at Jon Hall Chevrolet, it will deliver more performance and technology than many exotic cars and ultra-luxury convertibles.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 Convertible was unveiled at the LA Auto Show with the same 580-horsepower LS9 V8 powerplant of the ZL1 Coupe, but with a stowable top. Team Chevrolet is happy to point out that this sledge-hammer-of-a-drop-top is the most powerful production Chevy ever produced in the brand's 100-year history, but its open air nature doesn't mean it's a performance slacker.
General Motors engineers fitted the ZL1 Camaro with a tower-to-tower brace under the hood, an underbody tunnel brace, a transmission support brace and a front X brace and rear underbody V braces to give the ZL1 Convertible a more coupe-like ride. The result is less cowl and wheel shake than is expected of most convertibles. GM also added structural reinforcements to keep noise and vibration in check.
The ZL1 Convertible also features the same advanced suspension setup as the ZL1 Coupe: Magnetic Ride with damping levels that now adjust up to 1,000 times per second. The ZL1 Convertible can also travel from zero to 60 miles per hour in a scant 3.9 seconds, making it quick enough to keep the driver happy even when the top is up.

Jon Hall Chevrolet Announces 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco Priced from $25,995, Slightly Undercuts Hybrid Competitors!

The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco will start at $25,995 when it arrives at Jon Hall Chevrolet, in Daytona Beach, FL., early next year.

Chevrolet has announced that the 2013 Malibu Eco will start at $25,995—higher than most non-hybrid mid-size sedans, but lower than mid-size hybrid players such as the Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. The Eco model will spearhead the new global 2013 Chevrolet Malibu’s launch in the U.S. in early 2012—the presumably cheaper gas-only model, powered by a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder, will arrive later.

The Eco’s middle-of-the-road pricing makes sense: it’s a mild hybrid system—essentially the same as Buick’s eAssist—but unlike Toyota’s hybrid system, the electric motor cannot power the car on its own. As a result, fuel-economy estimates are an unexceptional (in the hybrid context) 26 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway; higher than a conventional gas-powered sedan’s, but lower than its hybrid competitors. Furthermore, the Eco’s 2.4-liter four combined with its electric motor/generator is good for 182 hp—less than some competitors’ four-cylinders. For comparison, the 2012 Toyota Camry hybrid LE returns 43 and 39 mpg city/highway, packs 200 hp, and is priced from $26,660. That’s not a whole lot more money for markedly better city fuel economy and comparable highway thrift. On the other end of the spectrum, the $21,455 base 2012 Hyundai Sonata—with a six-speed automatic—makes 198 hp and gets 24 and 35 mpg city/highway. At the moment, it appears the Malibu Eco’s pricing may be slightly out of step with its capabilities, but we will reserve judgment until we drive a production model for ourselves.

2012 Chevrolet Equinox, on sales at Jon Hall Chevrolet, Retail adds MyLink connectivity,new safety equipment.

The 2012 Equinox isn’t resting on its laurels despite a 52 percent increase in retail sales for the first 10 months of the year. New equipment available for 2012 includes Chevrolet MyLink in-vehicle wireless connectivity, customized infotainment options and new safety-enhancing features.

“Since this generation went on sale in mid-2009 we have sold every Equinox we can build, but we aren’t counting on that momentum to carry us,” said Russ Clark, director, Chevrolet marketing. “We have carefully selected technologies that our customers will find valuable and are able to offer them at very attractive prices.”

Chevrolet MyLink is an in-car infotainment package that builds on the safety and security of OnStar. It seamlessly integrates online services such as Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio® using hands-free voice and touch-screen controls via Bluetooth-enabled phones.

MyLink adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smartphones, building on the voice-activated Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevy vehicles. MyLink also includes a seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display that makes media selection easy to navigate.

MyLink also retains all the capabilities of today’s entertainment functions, including AM/FM/Sirius XM tuners, CD player with MP3 playback, auxiliary and USB inputs.

The 2012 Equinox features a General Motors’ exclusive crash- avoidance system that uses a single camera to help drivers avoid front-end and unsignalled lane departure crashes. The $295 option on LTZ trim levels is much less than systems that offer the same functions for more money.

This new active safety system uses a high-resolution digital camera mounted on the windshield ahead of the rearview mirror that looks for shapes of vehicles and lane markings. The system uses audible warnings and a high-mounted visual display to warn the driver if he or she is following another vehicle too closely, when a collision is imminent, or when departing a lane without signaling first.
Equinox’s warning display contains green “vehicle ahead” and “lanes detected” icons, as well as flashing red “forward collision alert” and amber “lane departure warning” icons that are accompanied by warning chimes. Forward collision alert operates at speeds above 25 mph and warns a driver if he or she is following too closely or in imminent danger of a front-end crash. When a collision is predicted to be imminent, vehicle brakes are pre-charged to help drivers quickly reach maximum braking. In addition to searching for other vehicles, the image processor also looks for lane markings to provide lane departure alerts. Available at speeds above 35 mph, the lane departure warning icon shines green when lane markings are detected to indicate the system is active. If the vehicle drifts out of the lane without a turn signal, the lamp switches to flashing amber and is augmented by warning beeps.

Chevrolet Traverse Seeks Sibling Peace on Longer Rides

In a family vehicle like the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, available at Jon Hall Chevrolet, abundant storage can help keep the peace among young rear-seat passengers on long drives.

General Motors designers and engineers used the latest 3D virtual reality technology and customer feedback to make it so.  GM Director of Design Quality Matthew Davis says the key lies in understanding where a customer wants certain features to be located. Customers were asked very early in the Traverse’s development about what they carry in their car and where they want to store it. A decade ago, customers wanted places to store CDs and Gameboys. ®, Today, the convenient storage of smartphones, MP3 players and electronic tablets is what matters.

With 116.4 cubic feet of storage, the Traverse offers the most cargo space in its segment along with seating for up to eight. 

Customer feedback helped engineers develop an optional family-friendly second-row armrest which unfolds into a tray table while leaving ample storage space for rear-seat passengers.

Recognizing that drivers and passengers riding “shot gun” need a variety of things within arm’s reach, designers created the front center armrest to slide fore and aft, and multiple storage bins can be raised out of the way for unobstructed access to the covered storage bin within the center console.

Keeping the little ones in mind, the design and engineering team considered customer feedback when positioning the cup holders molded in the doors. They were designed to fit various shapes and sizes of bottles and Sippy cups while remaining within reach of children sitting in the rear with or without a car seat. 

In a family-friendly focus group, children were asked to say where they wanted the DVD screen located, and their input was used in determining its position. 

Designers and engineers used a high-powered 3D virtual reality system called Cave Automated Virtual Environment, or CAVE, to develop interior dimensions and design ideas.

“We’re looking for ideas on where we can store items inside the vehicle while maintaining a clean, uncluttered interior with fresh industry leading design appeal,” said Davis. The CAVE allows his team to explore ideas and make changes to the vehicle’s interior in virtual reality, well before production.
The efforts have been noticed in automotive and other reviews of Traverse, such as one in 2010 by parents.com, the website of Parents magazine.

“You can get a week's-vacation worth of luggage into the rear cargo well, and with the seats folded down this vehicle could almost double as a delivery van,” parents.com said in rating Traverse among its best family cars.

“My job is to act as the voice of the customer, so getting customer input early is essential,” said Davis, the design quality director. “As a dad, I’m keenly tuned in to what kinds of storage features are needed in a vehicle.”

From hot rod to main street midsize sedan, Malibu, available at Jon Hall Chevrolet located in Daytona Beach, FL., spans 35 years, eight generations.

From hot rod to police cruiser to convertible to America’s main street sedan, few midsize cars have appealed to so many, for so long, as the Chevrolet Malibu.

The Malibu is the auto industry’s longest-running midsize nameplate, spanning 35 years, six decades, and eight iterations. Chevrolet has produced more than 8.5 million Malibu’s in the United States since its debut in 1964.

Introduced as the top model of the Chevrolet Chevelle midsize car line, Malibu’s combination of sporty design, enhanced trim and high level of standard equipment quickly established Malibu with 200,000 total sales in its first year. From 1964 to 1967, Malibu was available in a full range of body styles including two-door hardtops, two-door convertibles, four-door sedans and station wagons.

In its debut year, the Malibu lineup included the now legendary 300-horsepower, 327 cubic-inch V8 Malibu SS coupe and convertible; the following year introduced a more powerful 350-horsepower 327 cubic-inch small blocks. The Malibu SS Z16 package – available only in the hardtop model – featured Malibu’s first big block engine – a 396 cubic-inch 375 horsepower power plant.

For the 1966 model year, the Malibu SS was replaced by the SS396. This model came with a heavy-duty suspension and other performance upgrades. The 396 V8 was available in 325, 360 and 375 horsepower versions.

The Malibu was significantly redesigned for the 1968 model year as fastback styling overtook the industry. This second generation of Malibu’s continued with the front engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, but used different wheelbases for two-door and four-door models.

Chevrolet introduced a third generation of Chevelles, including a Malibu, in 1973 that would continue through 1977. The Malibu was available in coupe, sedan and wagon configurations. The Malibu SS package was available on all body styles including the wagon. In 1974, the Malibu became the entry-level Chevelle model.

The third-generation Malibu also was successful in NASCAR. The 1973-1977 body was aerodynamic and amassed 25 winner’s circle appearances for Chevrolet drivers Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Benny Parsons.

A smaller Malibu debuted in 1978, responding to a rise in fuel economy demands, yet retained contemporary styling and features. The Malibu’s first era of rear-wheel-drive cars ended after the 1983 model year when an all-new generation of front-wheel-drive midsize cars was introduced in 1997 following a 14-year production hiatus.

Malibu was reborn as a four-door sedan with a four-cylinder 150 horsepower and a V6 with 155 horsepower. Malibu quickly earned a reputation as a well-built, value-driven sedan designed to take on established midsize leaders. It also earned Motor Trend magazine’s Car-of-the-Year award for 1997.

A sixth-generation Malibu debuted for the 2004 model year in four-door sedan and extended sedan versions with Ecotec 4-cylinder and V6 engines. It again garnered awards and recommendations from automotive media, independent research groups and safety advocates. The Malibu topped its segment in the 2005 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study. In 2006, the Malibu SS model was reintroduced with a 240-horsepower V6 with more aggressive front and rear clips, 18” wheels, and sport bucket seats.

In 2007, Chevrolet launched a seventh-generation for the 2008 model year. It became one of the division’s most highly decorated vehicles, earning more than 40 automotive industry honors, including the 2008 North American Car of the Year.

The Malibu was Chevrolet’s – and General Motors – best-selling passenger car in 2010, with nearly 200,000 cars (198,770) sold. The Malibu is the industry’s only midsize car to win the Consumers Digest Automotive “Best Buy” award the past three years – 2011, 2010 and 2009. It has also been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the past two years (2010 and 2011). Malibu helped Chevrolet increase market share by 2 percentage points within the mid-car segment from just fewer than 7 percent in 2008 to nearly 9 percent in 2010.

The all-new 2013 Malibu is Chevrolet’s eighth-generation Malibu and first global midsize for customers in nearly 100 markets on six continents. It will serve as Chevrolet’s flagship
vehicle in many parts of the world including China, Korea, Europe, Australia and more. The Malibu is designed to stand out around the world with a roomy, quiet and upscale interior. Its ride and handling is expected to challenge the best cars in the midsize category. The new Malibu will be built in China, Korea and two locations in the United States. It is scheduled to start production in Fairfax, Kan., in early 2012 and at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly next summer.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is an all-new model that replaces the Chevrolet Aveo. The Sonic hasn’t gone on sale yet, but it has already received positive reviews from the automotive press because it has better performance, a more attractive exterior and a higher quality interior compared with the Aveo it replaces.

The Sonic also surpasses the Aveo with higher safety ratings. This week, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Sonic an IIHS Top Safety Pick because it received the top score of “good” in front, side, rollover and roof strength crash tests. The Sonic also has standard electronic stability control, which the IIHS lists as a requirement for its Top Safety Pick award. The IIHS says that its award applies to both the hatchback and sedan versions of the Sonic.

Jon Hall Chevrolet is Proud that Chevy is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at NASCAR

Chevrolet will make a $200 donation to the American Cancer Society for each caution lap that a specially themed pink Camaro SS pace car runs in upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Richmond International Raceway. The Atlanta race begins 7:30 p.m. Sunday (televised on ESPN). The Richmond race is 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 (televised on ABC).
Chevrolet's commitment to battling breast cancer won't stop on the track. In its centennial year, the brand is partnering with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative leading up to October, which is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Chevy’s Nov. 3 birthday. Other Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events will be announced later.
“For 100 years, Chevy has been helping people along the journey of life in countless ways,” said Alan Batey, Chevrolet vice president, Sales and Service. “But as we all know, sometimes life’s journeys take detours or end too early.
